Joint Committee on Public Health and the Women's Caucus hearing on Domestic Violence as a Public Health Issue
October 30, 2017
JDI's Policy Director Maureen Gallagher was on a panel with Lt. Governor Karyn Polito and Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders giving testimony at this public hearing. JDI's membership was well represented by Stephanie Brown and Trinity White (Casa Myrna), Sabrina Santiago (The Network/La Red), Dawn Sauma (Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence), Janis Broderick (Elizabeth Freeman Center), and Linda Cavaioli (YWCA of Central MA). The overarching themes of the day were that domestic and sexual violence is a matter of public health as well as a public safety concern and human rights issue and that our responses and approaches must take an intersectional approach informed by an analysis of systemic and historical oppressions.
