State and Federal Action Needed to Support Immigrant Survivors
September 06, 2017
The Trump Administration, through US Attorney General Jeff Sessions, announced on September 5 that it would be phasing out of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which was put in place 5 years ago by then President Obama through an Executive Order. This program has provided relief to more than 7,900 Massachusetts children and young adults - and as many as 800,000 across the country - allowing them to attend college and work legally.
JDI is committed to joining with our allies across the state and nation to protect the dignity and rights of immigrants. To this end, we will continue to advocate for humane immigration policy at both the state and federal levels. Please join us in taking actions on both fronts AND by sharing this alert with your networks and community members:
FEDERAL ACTION:
Take action now by contacting your members of Congress to urge them to support the DREAM Act, and engaging your communities to do the same. The DREAM Act will give young immigrants a clear, reliable path to citizenship. The Congress must act within 6 months to prevent the deportation of thousands of immigrants who may have no country to return to.
MASSACHUSETTS ACTION:
Take action now by contacting your state representatives and senators requesting that they swiftly take action on the Safe Communities Act. Within Massachusetts, we will push ever harder for state policies that make everyone feel safe and welcome regardless of immigration status, including the Safe Communities Act and legislation to extend in-state tuition to all Massachusetts high school graduates.
